Ingredients: Organic rice, barley, brown rice, glutinous rice, black beans — all Korean-grown
Purity check: No added sugar; vegan
Process: Slow-cooked into syrup (jocheong) from a family recipe, on the family's own farm
Net weight: 310g (11 oz)
Storage method: Store in a cool, dry place; refrigerate after opening
Good to know: A one-for-one sugar swap — use about 1¼ cups of syrup for 1 cup of sugar.
Five grains, no sugar
This is jocheong — Korean grain syrup — cooked the traditional way from five organic grains: rice, barley, brown rice, glutinous rice, and black beans. There's no sugar and no oligosaccharide; the sweetness comes entirely from slow-cooking the grains until they turn sweet on their own. It pours amber and smooth, with a rounder, more savory sweetness than a plain sugar syrup.
A family recipe, farm to bottle
Father's Hill grows its own organic grains in Goheung and cooks the syrup on-site, in small batches, following a recipe passed down in the family. Because it's unrefined and made slowly, the flavor reads as grain rather than flat sweetness — the difference you notice the moment it goes into a dish.
How to use it
Use it as a direct sugar substitute — about 1¼ cups of syrup per cup of sugar. It's especially good in Korean cooking, glazing galbi or seasoning a fish braise, and it works just as well stirred into coffee or tea, brushed onto pancakes with a little cinnamon, or spooned over fruit and yogurt.
Father's Hill began with a father. When his daughter Nahee was born with severe eczema, Juho — then an engineer at a semiconductor company — left his job and moved his family back to his hometown of Goheung, in Jeollanam-do, so he could feed her without refined sugar. He began farming organic grains and making traditional grain syrup (jocheong) the slow, old-fashioned way, as a sugar replacement she could eat freely, and went on to develop what's often called Korea's first no-sugar jam. Everything is still made in Goheung from good Korean-grown fruit and organic-certified grains, with no added sugar.
